Mr. Howard E. Brown, Jr., 86, longtime resident of Hilltop Drive and current resident of Sterling House, died Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes and Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Rick Elsey officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to West End Baptist Church, 900 West 7th St., Columbia, TN 38401. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Mr. Brown was reared in Maury County, the son of the late Howard E. Brown, Sr. and Cova Lee Thompson Brown. He was a Gunner's Mate Third Class in the United States Navy during World War II. On January 26, 1949 he married Carlene Stills Brown who preceded him in death on January 1, 2012. He was employed by Monsanto Chemical Company for over thirty years. Mr. Brown raised beagle hounds and loved rabbit hunting and fishing. He was a charter member of West End Baptist Church where he was a former deacon. Survivors include his sons, Donald E. "Don" (Trish) Brown, James Otey "Jim" (Debbie) Brown both of Columbia; daughter-in-law, Patricia Gray Brown of Columbia; grandchildren, EriCa Brown, Brittany Brown, EriKa Brown, Hayley (Cody Bevill) Brown, Michael Brown, Jonathan Brown, Brandon (Sydney) Brown; great grandchildren, Breanna Morhman, Isaac Brown, Camden Brown; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Luckett, Gladys Bickmeyer, Barbara Jones; brother-in-law, James (Janice) Stills; two special nieces, Annette (Eddie) Prince and Janice Kirk; and numerous other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Sgt. First Class Barry Lee Brown and a sister, Louise Brown Hanes. Pallbearers include Michael Brown, Eddie Prince, Jonathan Brown, Brandon Brown, Pete Ridley, Steven Prince, James Stills, Cody Bevill, Michael Kirk, Matthew Kirk and Brian Kirk.
