Hugh Douglas English, 82, retired from the shipping department at Union Carbide Corporation and former long-time resident of Greeley Drive in Columbia, died Sunday, June 8, 2008 at Middle Tennessee Medical Center in Murfreesboro. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Buddy Royston officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The Giles County native was the son of the late James Campbell English and Mary Hays English. He was a 1944 graduate of Campbellsville High School. He enlisted in the U. S. Army June 6, 1944 and served in France, Belgium, Holland, and in Germany in the 379th Infantry Company for three months in mortar combat with German ground forces. He was awarded the EAME Theatre Ribbon with two bronze stars. He was a member of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19 and Craft Memorial United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy Dean Johns English on March 18, 2006. Survivors include three daughters, Elizabeth (Jim) Bradley of Norcross, Georgia, Elaine (Doug) McKee of Murfreesboro, and Beverly (Charlie Hunt) English of Murfreesboro; two sons, Willis "Bill" (Joani) Mashburn of Norcross, Georgia and Barry (Karen Cartwright) English of Columbia; a sister, Mildred Collier of Bowling Green, Kentucky; a brother, William English of Knoxville; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are Patrick McKee, Eric Mashburn, Matt Erwin, Robert English, Mike Collier, and Johnny Beatty.
