View Funeral WebcastImogene Harris Hammond, 95, former long-time resident of Brown Street, passed peacefully Friday, January 20, 2017 at Rose Care in Nashville.Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 10:00 A.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with David Morris and Mike Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 3:00 - 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Born February 2, 1921 in Talladega County, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Emmett Clayton Harris and Estelle Williams Harris. On August 15, 1948, she married Grover Cleveland Hammond who preceded her in death April 25, 2007. Mrs. Hammond earned her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Montevallo College. She began her teaching career in Brunswick, Georgia before moving to Maury County. She was a former matron at the Tennessee Children's Home in Spring Hill for several years and taught at Culleoka for a short period of time. After 25 years at McDowell Elementary School as a first-grade teacher, she retired but continued her love for teaching and taught adults how to read. Mrs. Hammond was a former member of the Maury County Retired Teachers Association and a member of Highland Church of Christ, where she taught Sunday School and Women's Bible Class. Her greatest love other than church and family was teaching.Survivors include her daughter, Jane (Bobby) Boshers of Columbia; sons, George E. (Ann) Hammond of Fountain Inn, South Carolina; Owen L. (Judy) Hammond of Cookeville; John R. (Judith) Hammond of Nolensville; sisters, Kate Connell of Sylacauga, Alabama; and Shirley Brannon of Wetumpka, Alabama; ten grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her great grandson, Christopher Isaiah Boshers; sisters, Katherine Thrasher and Bess Cater; brothers, Emmett Harris and Orby T. Harris. Active pallbearers will be Christopher Boshers, Jeremy Boshers, Kyle Boshers, Jason Hammond, Justin Hammond, Jacob Hammond, Brady Hammond, and Daniel Hammond. Honorary pallbearers include Becky Hammond, Andrea Hammond, Ladies Bible Class at Highland Church of Christ, and members of the Maury County Retired Teacher Association.
