Mrs. Irene Barnes Hendley, 84, long-time resident of Dowell Branch Road, died Thursday, March 30, 2006 at Maury Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Earl Davis and The Rev. Thomas Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Godwin-Chappell Cemetery. She was a long-time faithful member of Godwin-Chappel United Methodist Church. Following graduation from Columbia Central High School in 1940, like many other young ladies she joined the war effort and worked as a crane operator for Monsanto Company during World War II. For 32 years she was medical receptionist at Maury Regional Hospital, retiring in 2004 at age 82. Mrs. Hendley was a avid reader, sports fan, and beloved by her family, co-workers and many friends. Survivors include a daughter, Judy Hendley Sanders of Columbia; two sons, Gary (Diane) Hendley of Columbia and John Rader (Deborah) Hendley of Bowling Green, Kentucky; four sisters, Wynona Doggett of Columbia, Leona (Arlan) Cummins of Pulaski, Marie (Henry) Lee of Columbia and Anna Ruth Priest of LaVergne; six grandchildren, Victoria Marie (Jeff) Gay, Marnie Olivia Hendley, Audrey Akers, Julie Diane Hood, Tara Akers, and Patrick Ryan Hendley; two great-grandchildren, Jeffrey David Gay and John Nicholas Gay; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lillian Fraser and a granddaughter, Olivia Morris "Libby" Wells. Active pallbearers are J. W. Slaughter, Thomas Culberson, Carl Harris Sellers, Jr., Eldridge McMeen, Jeff Gay, Patrick Ryan Hendley, Joe Hendley, Jack Hendley and Gerald Martin. Honorary pallbearers include Murphy Crawford, Dr. Rufus Clifford, Dr. James Richardson, Dr. Thomas Farmer, nurses and staffs of the Pediatric Unit, Oncology Unit, and Radiation Theraphy Unit of Maury Regional Hospital.
