Irene Wertz Race

Irene Wertz Race, 79, retired employee of Vanderbilt University, died Friday, May 5, 2023, at her home. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, May 13, at 3:00 P.M. with visitation from 1:00-3:00 at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Derek Hunter officiating. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born April 14, 1944, in San Antonio, Texas, she attended Purdue University and Vanderbilt University. Irene was the daughter of the late Peter Flood Wertz and the late Anna Ruth Mitts. She is also preceded in death by two brothers; Peter Richard Wertz and Michael George Wertz. Her favorite thing was being surrounded by her family and entertaining her grandchildren with lively stories. She also enjoyed shopping, traveling, art, horseback riding, gardening, and playing piano. Irene was a member of Restoration Community Church. ` Survivors include her husband, Bud Race; children, Michael Deckard; Kim (Tracy) Maxwell; Jessica (Wayne) Humphrey; Russ (Christie) Race; Anna (Howard) Vosburgh; Sam Race; Lori (Brandon) Race; grandchildren Justin, Abby (Austin), Rachel (Garrison), Trent, Trevor, Andrew (Holly), Nathaniel, Cody, and Jesse; two great grandchildren, and much beloved extended family.
