Jack Dennis Butler, 70, longtime farmer and resident of Tom Fitzgerald Road, died Thursday, January 12, 2017 at VA Medical Center in Nashville. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Reverend Thomas Vann officiating. Burial will follow in Lasting Hope Cemetery with full military honors provided by the Giles County Honor Guard. The family will visit with friends Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until service time at the funeral home. His passion for farming lasted a lifetime. In the last few years, Jack farmed with his son-in-law, Phil, whom he loved like a son and continued farming up until his illness. Jack was a member of Neapolis United Methodist Church. He graduated from Spring Hill High School in 1964 lettering in football for 4 years as a guard. A veteran of the Vietnam War, Jack was stationed in Korea serving as Sergeant in the United States Army guarding the demilitarized zone. On May 10, 1968, Jack and Wanda were married and celebrated 48 years together. He was a former employee of Union Carbide and retired from ICP in Lewisburg; after retirement he worked at Endo Surg Medical. In addition to his wife, Wanda Godbee Butler of Columbia, he is survived by his daughter, Jan (Phil) Sutherland; grandchildren, Rachel Elizabeth Sutherland, Lane Butler Sutherland, and Luke Walker Sutherland; sister, Martha (James) Lee; brother, Joe (Emily) Butler; nieces, Brenda (Cary) Blue, Linda (Bill) McMillin; nephews, David (Kari) Butler, Mike (Sonya) Butler; great nieces and nephews, Billy McMillin, Bobby McMillin, Bryan McMillin, Parker Butler, Spencer Butler, Lilly Butler, and Mattie Butler.He was preceded in death by his son, Reed Butler in 2011; parents, Walter N. and Martha Edwards Butler; brother, Thomas Butler; father and mother-in-law, Ruben Leon and Evelyn Walker Church; brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Ethel Butler; and sister and brother-in-law, Betty Ann and Bud Hurt.Active pallbearers will be Phil Sutherland, Lane Sutherland, Luke Sutherland, David Butler, Mike Butler, Cary Blue, Bill McMillin, Edgar Chumley, and Greg Shouse. Honorary pallbearers include Tony Harris, Jimmy Goolsby, Jim Baker, Steve Baker, Aubrey Baker, Larry Watson, Steve Sutherland, Greg Zapel, Will Scott, and Spring Hill High School Class of 1964.
