View Video TributeMr. James R. "Jim/Jimmy" Bass, a life-long resident of Columbia, passed away unexpectedly at Maury Regional Medical Center on Sunday, April 13th, 2014. He had been battling cancer for a short period of time. Per his request, a graveside service will be conducted Friday, April 18, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at Rose Hill Cemetery with Rev. Rick Points officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Thursday, April 17, 2014 from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. The family requests memorials to be made to St. Jude's Cancer Research Center, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the son of the late Roy H. Bass and Frances Cheek Bass. He attended Central High School. Mr. Bass was a retired Lieutenant of the Maury County Sheriff's department and had worked in several professions during his exciting and fulfilling life. He had obtained his private pilot's license many years ago, had taken up skydiving at the same time and built some beautiful hot rod cars, boats and dune buggies. He liked boating, water skiing and motorcycle riding. He was also an avid gun collector. He was a past president of the Maury County Gun Club and the local Fraternal Order of Police. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. Anyone who knew Jim will attest that he was an absolute perfectionist at anything he did. Jim is survived by his wife of almost 48 years (April 22nd) Juaneece McKee Bass of Columbia and daughter Holly DeAnn (Dr. Matthew) McMasters of Athens, AL. Surviving siblings include Edward W. "Wayne" (Linda) Bass of Columbia, Barbara A. Bass Haney of St. George, UT, Margaret L. Bass (Larry) Michel, David T. (Teresa) Bass and Dwight C. Bass all living in Las Vegas, NV, Mary F. Bass Ervin of Columbia and Carol Sue Bass Madison of Spring Hill. He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Joe C. Bass. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. He loved his grandchildren, Kinsley Danielle McMasters and Kaitlyn Nicole McMasters, more than life itself. They were his pride and joy. Active pallbearers will be William H. "Billy" Carter, Billy Kennedy, Danny Moser, Danny McAdams, Sr., Mel Cates, John E. "Snowball" Mayberry, and David D. Gibson. Honorary pallbearers include his brothers and sisters, other members of the Bass family, the Fraternal Order of Police, the Elks Lodge, Pete Payne, Dwayne Mitchell, and Dan McMasters.
