View Video TributeView Funeral WebcastJames Benton Boyd, Jr., 67, retired Columbia Police Chief, died Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at his residence in Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 3:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Terry Peery and Bobby Sands officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the Columbia Police Department Honor Guard. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 3:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials for the Maury County Courthouse Bench Fund to the James Boyd Memorial Fund, c/o First Farmers & Merchants Bank, P. O. Box 1148, Columbia, TN 38402. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the son of the late James Benton Boyd, Sr. and Elise Johnson Boyd. He served in the U. S. Army from 1963 - 1966. Upon his return from service, he was employed at Stauffer Chemical Company until joining the Columbia Police Department in 1970 and working thru the ranks to Chief of Police from 1988 until his retirement in 2001. He also served as interim manager for the City of Columbia. After his retirement, he worked at First Farmers & Merchants Bank, and more recently was bailiff for General Sessions Court. In 1990 he was the recipient of the Bailey Patton-Walter Griffin Law Officer Achievement Award. He was past chairman of the Governor's Alliance for a Drug Free Tennessee, past president of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #26, member of the Board of Directors Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police and served as Vice President for two years. He was also a past chairman of the Columbia Civil Service board, Councilman for Ward #4, and Planning Commission Member. Mr. Boyd was also a member of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19, International Association of Chiefs of Police, Tennessee Law Enforcement Officers Association, International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators, Elks Lodge #686, and The SHOP. He was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife whom he married October 3, 1975, Berrie Coleman Boyd of Columbia; son, Jeff Boyd of Columbia; stepdaughter, Terri (Joel) Seaton of Columbia; grandsons, Robert Boyd and Adam Boyd; step grandchildren, Jaden Seaton, Terryn Seaton, Destiny Seaton; sister, Nellie Pruitt of Columbia; and brothers, Wendell (Gail) Boyd of Hampshire; and Robert Boyd of Jacksonville, Florida. Active pallbearers will be Chevy White, Tommy Logue, Lonnie Lyles, Mike Johnson, Russ Parkes, Joey Allen, Rod Guttowsky, Ronnie Rogers, Mark Ours, and Bill Doelle. Honorary pallbearers include past and present employees of City of Columbia, employees of First Farmers & Merchants Bank, employees of Maury County Courthouse, Pat & Janice Troope, Bill & Joyce Jackson, Mel & Pete Payne, Dr. David & Robin Ours, Bill & Betty Shelton, Vicky Allen, Mike & Teresa Davidson, Sonya Rogers, Vickie Logue, and Perry Pugh.
