COMMAND SERGEANT MAJOR JAMES R. CRICK, U.S. ARMY (ret) Command Sergeant Major James R. Crick, U. S. Army (ret), 71, a resident of General Roberts Drive, died Saturday, October 19, 2002 at NHC Hillview Health Care. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Doug McCandless and Oliver Pantall officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery with full military honors provided by the U. S. Army 101st Airborne Division Honor Guard. The family will visit with friends after 12:00 Noon Sunday and Monday at the funeral home. The Lawrence County native was the son of the late William Porter Crick and Ethel Lenora Littrell Crick and was retired from General Electric as security supervisor. He was a member of the Loyal Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19 and the Tennessee Volunteer Guard. His military career began in 1947 with enlistment in the U. S. Army. He served assignments in Korea 1951 to 1954 and Vietnam 1968 to 1969. During his service he was awarded the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with palm leaf cluster, three Bronze Stars with oak leaf cluster, Good Conduct Medal (4th award) and was nominated for Command Sergeant of the U. S. Army at the Pentagon. At his retirement in 1973, he held the rank of Command Sergeant Major, the highest non-commissioned military level. Upon discharge, he transferred to the U. S. Army Reserves at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mary Parker Crick of Columbia; daughter, Pamela Sue Haulk-Shubert and son-in-law, Ross Shubert of Arrington; grandchildren, Jessica Leila Haulk and Jarrod Sanders Haulk of Arrington; sisters, Mary Crabtree of Lewisburg and Joyce (Thomas) Fisher of Nolensville; brother, William "Billy" Crick of Texas; several nieces and nephews. The 101st Airborne Honor Guard will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include Ross Shubert, Lee Shives, Thomas Fisher, Jerry Prentice, Brian Thomas, Cody Beard and William Chapman.
