View Funeral WebcastJames Walker "Pete" Harlan, Sr. 83, resident of Roberts Bend Road, died Saturday, April 29, 2017 at NHC Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Reverend Bo Myers officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Monday from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born November 18, 1933 in Maury County, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Jim C. Harlan and the late Ducie Mayfield Harlan. He was President of FFA during high school and in 1954 earned the American Farmer Degree. He worked for Monsanto Chemical Company and after retirement he enjoyed working on his family farm, hunting, and fishing. Mr. Harlan coached girls' softball, was a longtime member of the Maury County Park Board and St. Luke United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School for over 30 years. Survivors include his wife, whom he married January 6, 1952, Sue White Harlan of Columbia; son, James Walker "Buddy" (Marilyn) Harlan of Columbia; daughter, Della (Gerald) Matlock of Columbia; sister, Eloise (Larry) Cheatham of Columbia; grandchildren, Lori (Josh) Thomas, Emily (Richard) Ferguson, Amanda (Tracy) Turman, James C. (Stephanie) Harlan, Alan (Tiffany) Romine; great grandchildren, Daphne Thomas, Violet Thomas, Zachary Thomas, Levi Harlan, Jackson Turman, Landon Turman, Hudson Turman, Chloe Romine, Morgan Wood; and several nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William M. "Bill" Harlan; and sister, Irma Ruth Harlan.Active pallbearers will be James C. Harlan, Alan Romine, Richard Ferguson, Josh Thomas, Tracy Turman, Jim Pennington, Harlan Dabney, and David Priest. Honorary pallbearers include retirees of Monsanto Chemical Company, members of St. Luke United Methodist Church Adult I Sunday School Class, past and present members of the Maury County Park Board, Dr. Paul Perryman, and Dr. Robert Myers.
