Dr. James Wallace Wilkes, Jr., 83, long-time Columbia physician, passed away Saturday, October 6, 2007. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Dr. James Wallace Wilkes and Kate Gordon Latta Jones Wilkes. He was a graduate of Columbia Military Academy, Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and Cornell Medical School in New York City.His specialty training in ophthalmology and ear, nose, and throat was done at Tulane University, Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, and Memphis Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Hospital.He married the former Pauline Connor of Columbia in 1948. Upon completion of his training, they chose to return to Columbia where he practiced medicine until his retirement in 1988.He is survived by his wife, Pauline Connor Wilkes, his daughter, Dr. Nancy Wilkes of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and son, James Wallace (Kathleen) Wilkes, III of Dallas, Texas. He leaves nieces Helen Shapard (Waymon) Hickman, Kay Shapard (Ronnie) Curtis of Columbia, and Helen Connor Wunderlick of Nashville. He also leaves nephews Oliver Benton Quin, IV of Venice Beach, California, Clark Jones Quin of Boston, Massachusetts, Richard Hillary Quin of Nashville, Thomas Kelly (Genise) Connor, Jr. of Sandia, New Mexico, and William Wemyss (Kim) Connor of Washington, D. C. He was preceded in death by sisters Harriette Jones Quin and Helen Jones Shapard.The family would like to express gratitude to the many friends and patients who enriched his life. Graveside services will be conducted Monday at 3:00 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery with Dr. Bill Williamson officiating. The family will visit with friends at the graveside one-half hour before the service.
