Jean Jones Jones

October 27, 1926 — March 18, 2011

Jean Carolyn Jones Jones, 84, retired teacher and former Columbia resident, passed away Friday, March 18, 2011 at her residence in Beaufort, South Carolina. Born in Maury County October 28, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Herbert Kittrell Jones and Justice Southall Jones of the Hampshire Community. While growing up in the Cathey's Creek Community, she attended Hampshire schools prior to attending Breneau Academy in Gainesville, Georgia. Later, she graduated from Ward-Belmont College in Nashville. Mrs. Jones was an avid sportsman, professional, mother, and grandmother. She taught first grade at McDowell School for a number of years and at one time was Society Editor for The Daily Herald. Mrs. Jones was a former long-time member of the First United Methodist Church in Columbia.She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, John B. (Little Pooky) Jones, Sr. and son John B. Jones, Jr. Survivors include her daughter, Jennifer Jones-Dowdney and husband Thomas Heyward Dowdney of Beaufort, South Carolina; and grandchildren, Laura Jean Jones, John Beaumont Jones, and Ashley Heyward Brooks Dowdney.A graveside memorial service will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Columbia Saturday, July 30th at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Melinda Britt officiating. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 222 West 7th Street, Columbia 38401. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements.
