Jean Reeves Thurman, 85, retired employee of Occidental Chemical Corp and longtime resident of Sowell Mill Pike, died Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at Signature Health Care. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Jeremy Butt officiating. Burial will follow in Lynnwood Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Saturday from 12:00 - 2:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Giles County native was the daughter of the late Marvin Reeves and the late Mattie Reeves. On January 14, 1949, she married Foster Thurman who preceded her in death September 22, 2016. She was a 1949 graduate of Jones High School in Giles County. Mrs. Thurman's career at Occidental spanned forty plus years, where she spent most of that time as secretary to the plant manager. She was a member of Northview Church of Christ. Survivors include her daughter Judy (Terry) McCaleb of Columbia; son, Randal Foster Thurman of Columbia; special great grandson whom she helped rear, Brent McCaleb; grandchildren, Tim McCaleb, Jason (Dawn) McCaleb, Gabriel (Sherry) Hay, David Thurman, Eric Thurman; eighteen great grandchildren; and sister, Jewell Crockett of Columbia. She was preceded in death by siblings, Jesse Reeves, Marvin Reeves, Jr., Katherine Thompson, Helen Ledbetter, and James Reeves. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will include former employees of Occidental.
