Jerry Phillip Haynes, Sr.

d. September 7, 2019

View Funeral Webcast Jerry P. Haynes is at peace, leaving this world Saturday, September 7, 2019.  Jerry Haynes was the youngest of A.I. “Pap” and Electa Sisson Haynes’ seven children.  Jerry was born in Nashville and reared in Columbia.  He graduated from Central High in 1954 and was a first-generation college graduate, earning his Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Tennessee Tech.  At Tech he was in ROTC and later was a member of the United States Army Reserves. In 1960, he married Betty Carolyn Sanders, who he met on a blind date.  He obtained his professional engineering license in four states in 1968.  They moved to Huntsville, Alabama where they reared two sons; Jerry Phillip Jr. and Paul Anthony.  In Huntsville, Jerry worked for an engineering firm supporting the Redstone Arsenal and the Apollo mission rockets during the space race period in American history.  They returned to Nashville in 1973 and Jerry worked with two separate engineering firms before starting his own consulting engineering firm in 1983.  Later he did individual consulting work for various engineering firms in Nashville and Birmingham before retiring in 1998.  In 1995, Jerry and Betty bought a farm in Culleoka and restored a two story 1904 farm house as their retirement home.  He developed serious health problems over the next several years including two forms of cancer.  Remission, and the grace of God allowed him to live a full life and continue his hobbies of working on the house restoration and around the farm.  Jerry loved music and loved to sing; first singing in the choir at First Baptist Church, then in gospel quartets in college, lastly singing tenor in a barbershop quartet in Huntsville, Alabama. He and Betty loved traveling, visiting 13 foreign countries and 45 out of 50 states.  Renting an automobile and leaving home for an adventure without a return date was great fun for both. He was an avid sports fan whose loves included coaching Little League Baseball, fishing, motor sports, football, and baseball. Jerry will be dearly missed by his family and they are so very thankful for their time with him.  Jerry was very proud of his children, Jerry Phillip Haynes, Jr. and Paul Anthony (Leighanne) Haynes, his grandchildren, Cole (Holly) Haynes, Alex Haynes (Wesley) Scott, Mike Haynes, and Ashley Haynes, and great granddaughter, Harper Haynes.  Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11:00 A.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to American Red Cross, 2201 Charlotte Avenue, Nashville, TN 37203, Ronald McDonald House, 2144 Fairfax Avenue, Nashville, TN 37212, or Shriners’ Children’s Hospital, 4400 Clayton Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63110. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Sincere thanks are extended to all who provided loving care during his illness, especially, Dr. Karl VanDevender and Dr. Douglas Kennedy.
