Jesse Aubrey Shelton

July 2, 1934 — July 20, 2019

Jesse Aubrey Shelton passed from this world into eternity on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at the age of 85. Aubrey was the eldest of three children born to Mary Myrtle Moore Shelton and Jesse Adams Shelton of the Mooretown Community in Cannon County, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his father in May 1998, his mother in September 2008, his brother Jack Shelton in August 2013, and by his wife Virgie Ann Medkiff Jarnigan Shelton in May 2007. Aubrey is survived by his sister, Joyce “Polly” Warpoole of Murfreesboro and her four daughters, Tammye Bush (Jim), Teresa Hobson, Donna Gunter (Lindsay) and Wendy Woods (Chris), sister-in-law, Patricia Shelton and her children of Michigan, and his stepson Larry Jarnigan and his wife, Cindy of Brentwood and their children. Aubrey was a veteran and proudly served in the U.S. Army. He served in the Army nine years with some of his time spent in Germany. While living in Columbia, Tennessee, he worked many years for CSX Railroad as a brakeman. After residing in Columbia for some time, he and his wife moved from Columbia, Tennessee to Hunter’s Airfield in Spring Hill, Tennessee with their beloved dog, Snoopy. Aubrey inherited a love of flying and for airplanes from his father. He bought a small Cessna 150, and he and Ann flew to several fly-ins in other states.  Aubrey and Ann bought acreage in a community on the edge of Wilson County, Tennessee known as Vine, where Fall Creek Airfield was created for pilots to be able live on a private airfield, own a home complete with airplane hangar and fly personal planes. He and Ann lived in the Fall Creek Airfield Community many years. Aubrey enjoyed his wonderful neighbors, especially his special friends, Morton and Judy Boggs. Aubrey’s health began to deteriorate after his wife’s passing. After a stay in the Lebanon, Tennessee hospital, his doctor advised rehabilitation was needed. He was accepted into the Tennessee State Veterans Home in Murfreesboro, Tennessee to be closer to family members. He was cared for lovingly by the West nurses and tech, especially Ieva who called him “Poppa”.  Our love and appreciation goes out to the Tennessee State Veterans Home staff and to Judy and Morton Boggs who visited him regularly. Aubrey will be laid to rest beside his wife, Ann in Polk Memorial Gardens. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, July 23, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. with his good friend, Myron Lasater officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. Family members will serve as pallbearers. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to First Bank for the benefit of the Fall Creek Airfield, Inc. road improvement project and mailed to Judy Boggs, 205 Gwynn Road, Hangar 11, Lebanon, TN 37090. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com.
