A 1973 graduate of Culleoka High School, he studied engineering at Columbia State Community College and maintained a 4.0 grade average. He was associated with Custom Steel Fabricators for 31 years as a Master Welder and Craftsman and later with Walker Die Casting in Lewisburg for three years. A licensed electrician, he owned and operated Jim's Heating & Cooling and was a certified welding inspector. His vocation was his hobby and he applied his talents restoring antique tractors with his brother, Joe. He started watching his brothers work on cars as a youngster and became a first class auto mechanic. He and his brother, "Peanut," were involved in souping up Highway Patrol cars and he and his brother, Joe, built a 1969 Z28 Camero from ground up. His family stated: "He couldn't have made it through his illness without Joe, Ann, and Faye. He fought hard to stay alive for three years battling cancer. He wanted to live more than anything to be with his family. He was a wonderful son, brother, friend, husband, father, and grandfather. Always ready to help anyone, he would take phone calls and explain how to fix things, free of charge. He was a brilliant man and will be missed terribly by all his loved ones. Jim loved his neighbors and playing with the neighborhood pets."
