View Funeral WebcastMrs. Joan Roe Murphy, 74, retired Director of Nursing at the South Central Regional Health Department, died Monday, April 13, 2009 at her residence on Campbellsville Pike. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Thursday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Wendell Robinson and Kirk Brothers officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Maury County Public Library, 211 West Eighth Street, Columbia, TN 38401 or American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 1864, Columbia, TN 38402. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Davidson County native was the daughter of Richard N. Roe of Springfield, TN the late Flora Dell Alexander Roe. On September 16, 1956, she married Ben W. Murphy who preceded her in death on August 14, 2002. A graduate of Spring Hill High School, she earned her Nursing Degrees from St. Thomas School of Nursing in 1958 and Vanderbilt School of Nursing in 1970. An avid reader, Mrs. Murphy frequented the Maury County Public Library as often as possible. She was a lifetime member of the Tennessee Public Health Association. Her most enjoyable moments were camping with family and friends where she was a former member of Dimple of the Universe Campers Club and a charter member of the Hardison's Mill Campers. A true snowbird, she enjoyed camping during the winter months in the warmer climate of Mission, Texas. Mrs. Murphy was a member of Graymere Church of Christ and the Riddle/Williams Sunday School Class. In addition to her father, she is survived by two daughters, Roan Murphy (Bobby) Bradley of Athens, AL; Margo Murphy (Donald) Mills of Columbia; one sister, Ivy Nell Roe (James W.) Murphy of Springfield, TN; four grandchildren, Gene Bradley of Birmingham, AL; Kate Bradley of Athens, AL; Joanna Mills and Jamie Mills, both of Columbia; one niece; one nephew; and two great nieces. Pallbearers will be Paul Carpenter, Shelby Carpenter, Ricky Murphy, Gene Bradley, Roger Riddle, Doug Williams, and Jack Kenney . Honorary pallbearers will be members of Riddle/Williams Sunday School Class at Graymere Church of Christ; past and present Hardison's Mill Campers.
