Joe Cecil Crews, 96, retired employee of Dixie Electrotype Company and resident of Nashville, died Saturday, February 10, 2018, at Alive Hospice in Nashville. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 3:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Rush officiating. Burial will follow in Friendship Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 1:00 - 3:00 P.M. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19, 812 Nashville Highway, Columbia, TN 38401 or VFW Post 4969, 2021 Williamsport Pike, Columbia, TN 38401. Born October 25, 1921 in the Fountain Heights Community of Maury County, he was the son of the late Joseph Wesley Crews and the late Maggie Mae Denton Crews. Mr. Crews was a 1941 graduate of Columbia Central High School. During World War II, he proudly served his country as a carbine sharpshooter in the 234th Army Air Forces Base Unit and received The American Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. From 1941 - 1943, he was employed by Tennessee Aircraft Corporation in Nashville prior to his forty-three-year career with Dixie Electrotype Company, where he retired as a type-setter. Some of his favorite pastimes include raising bird dogs, hunting, fishing, and playing guitar. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Culleoka. Survivors include his wife whom he married April 20, 1942, Mildred Gibson Crews of Nashville; daughter, Cecile (Gary) York of Franklin; grandchildren, Todd (Heather) York of Atlanta, GA and Tara (Nathan) Ward of Spring Hill; great grandchildren, Caitlyn York, Wes Ward, and Evie Ward; niece, Rhonda Sutton; and nephew, John Tosh. Pallbearers will be Todd York, Nathan Ward, Edward Andrews, Randy York, Joe York, John Tosh, and Gary Landers.
