View Funeral Webcast Joe Farlow, Jr., 84, retired farmer and longtime resident of the Pottsville Community, died Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at NHC Columbia.Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:00 P.M. at Old Lasea Church of Christ with Brother Kenny McFarlen officiating. Burial will follow in Brown Cemetery on Hardison Mill Road. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home and Friday from 12:00 – 2:00 P.M. at Old Lasea Church of Christ.The family suggests memorials to Old Lasea Church of Christ, c/o Mike Corter, 945 Collins West Road, Lewisburg, TN 37091. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com.Born July 6, 1934 in Marshall County, he was the son of the late Jody Farlow and the late Fannie Belle Miller Farlow. His father passed away when Joe was three years old. At this time, his mother and two sisters moved in with his grandparents where he continued to live and farm most of his life. He attended Pottsville School and graduated from Forrest High School in Chapel Hill in 1952. Joe had a love for the farm life and when his grandfather passed away, he left the farm to his grandson. As a young man, Joe held several different jobs while trying to farm on the side. He worked at Admiral Motors, was a school bus driver, and also tried his hand at driving a milk truck. He worked several years as parts manager at Herbert Lewis Tractor Company on East Sixth Street before quitting this job in order to be a fulltime farmer. He also worked for his son in the fence business at Custom Fence Company. Joe and his wife, Shirley, milked dairy cows for over twenty years. He grew tobacco, being recognized in a farm magazine in 1964 for boosting such high-volume sales. Later he and his wife raised beef cattle on their farm in Pottsville. In 2000, he had to give up this type farming because of health reasons.Joe was appointed as an Elder at Old Lasea Church of Christ in 1995. He and Shirley were also caretakers of the church for many years. Joe was also a former member and treasurer of the East Maury County Fire Department in Pottsville. Survivors include his loving wife and caregiver of sixty-three years, Shirley Brown Farlow of Columbia; their children, Mickey Joe (Melissa) Farlow and Cathy (Stanley) Reed, both of Columbia; granddaughters, Michelle Farlow (John) Floyd, Crystal Farlow, and Carmen Reed (Kyle) Collins; and great granddaughters, Jaylyn Jo Floyd, Sara Belle Floyd, and Peyton Ryleigh Collins.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Norma Sweeton and Jean Bolden. Active pallbearers will be John Floyd, Stanley Reed, Terry Brown, Mike Corter, Dwight Brown, Enoch George, John Eslick, Roger Young, and Tony Jones. Honorary pallbearers will include classmates from Forrest High School, members of Old Lasea Church of Christ, Billy McKennon, Jerry Wayne Gilliam, and Eddie Joe Sweeton.The family is grateful to the staff of NHC Columbia and Caris Healthcare.
