Mr. John Brooks "Little Pooky" Jones, 81, resident of West 6th Street, died Wednesday, February 23, 2005 at Maury Regional Hospital. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday at Rose Hill Cemetery with Rev. Frank Smith officiating. Military honors will be provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Friday from 4:00 - 7:30p.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 222 West 7th St., Columbia, Tennessee, 38401 or the charity of your choice. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the son of the late James Henry Jones, Sr. and Mary Brooks Jones. He was a member of the 1940 graduating class of Columbia Central High School and served in the United States Army during World War II. In 1948 he and his brother "Big Pooky" founded and co-owned Jones Brothers Gulf Service Station and in 1955 the two brothers founded and co-owned Columbia Mid-State Distributing Co. He recently received recognition for fifty years of service from the Tennessee Malt Beverage Association. He and Cyril Evers established Evers & Jones Realty Company in December, 1963 and it is the oldest real estate partnership still in business in Maury County having the original partners. In November, 2004 he was recognized for his service as a real estate professional for fifty years by the Southern Middle Tennessee Board of Realtors. In addition, he was a member of the Tennessee Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Club, a member of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19, an honorary Kentucky Colonel, and was an avid horse racing fan. Mr. Jones was a member of First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Jean J. Jones of Columbia; one daughter, Jennifer (Tom) Jones-Dowdney of Columbia; one grandson, Beau Jones; two granddaughters, Laura Jones, Ashley Dowdney; one brother, James H. (Virginia) Jones, Jr. of Columbia; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, John B. "Johnny" Jones, Jr. and one sister, Josephine Burns. Pallbearers will be James H. "Chipper" Jones, III, Cyril Evers, Paul Ragsdale, Graham Jones, Jerry Colley and Phillip Evers. Honorary pallbearers will be Martha Gilliam, Brooks Jones, Joe Underwood, Dalton Mounger, Joe Kelley, Linda Colley, past and present employees of Columbia Mid-State Distributing Co., and employees of Evers & Jones Realty.
