John R. Duncan, 79, retired since 1989 from the store room at Union Carbide Corporation and resident of New Highway 7 in the Santa Fe Community, died Saturday, July 26, 2008 at Life Care of Centerville.éFuneral services will be conducted Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Sherry Ladd and Rev. Mark Pennington officiating.é Burial will be in Santa Fe Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19.ééThe family will visit with friends Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home, concluding with Masonic Rites at 8:00 p.m.é Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com.éBorn in Decatur, Alabama, he was the son of the late John Raymond Duncan and Mabel Hoffman Duncan.é He was a graduate of Columbia Military Academy and did a year as a Post Graduate.é He entered the U. S. Army during the Korean War, serving on active duty from 1950 - 1952.éééMr. Duncan was a member of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19 for over 50 continous years, serving as Post Commander and as District Commander in 1987.é Additionally, he was a member of the Forty & Eight, chef de Guerre.é In 1949, he entered membership in Benton Masonic Lodge #111, served as Past Master, earned Scottish and York Rites and was a member of the Maury County Shrine.éHe joined Santa Fe Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1965 and served as Clerk of the Session for 29 years.éSurvivors include his wife of 54 years, Katie Woody Duncan of Santa Fe; daughters, Carole (Mark) Pennington of Durham, North Carolina, Phyllis (Jeff) McGee, and Lisa (Byron) White of Santa Fe; grandchildren, Greg Freeland, Tara Freeland, Daniel Pennington, Nick Pennington, Jeremy McGee, Daniel White, and Jessica White; great-grandchildren, Breanna Freeland and Caitlin Freeland; nieces, Vicki (Michael) Dodson and Sandy (Jeff) McLain; sister-in-law, Glenda Woody Adams.éHe was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Orvis Woody, mother-in-law, Ruby Woody, son-in-law, Mike Freeland, brother-in-law, Pat Adams, and niece, Vonda Lax Humphrey.éActive pallbearers are Greg Freeland, Jeremy McGee, Daniel White, Michael Dodson, Jack Willis, James Toungette, Jeff McLain, and Carl Hollingsworth. éHonorary pallbearers include Elders of Santa Fe Cumberland Presbyterian Church, members of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19, Forty & Eight, Benton Masonic Lodge #111, Union Carbide retirees, Maury County Shrine members, Leonard Potts, Tommy Hollingsworth, Jeff Beatty, Gary Beatty, Gerald Adkisson, James Woody, James Taylor, and Randall Baker.
