John Gilbert Young, Sr., 85, resident of Columbia, went home to God Monday, August 5, 2019 at his residence. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 12:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Reverend Bonnie Young officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 11:00 – 12:00 P.M. at the funeral home. He loved his country and served in the Army for several years, earning the rank Staff Sargent. On April 23, 1983, he married the love of his life, Rebecca Jane Cole Young who preceded him in death on February 18, 2017. Mr. Young loved God, his family, and his pets. He was a very loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Mr. Young was a people person, always making people smile and having a positive attitude. He is survived by his sons, Joe (Chris) Young, Dwayne Boyd, Bobby (Allison) Boyd; daughters, Diane (Lee) Wray, Lisa (Monty) Meacham, Natalie (Josh) Pewitt; grandchildren, Nick (Crystal) Burden, Nicole (Chris) Hensley, P.J. Andrews, Chris Boyd, Julie (Nate) Cross, Jesse (Nicole) Boyd, Amber Barnhill, William Barnhill, Madie Pewitt, Katie Pewitt, Evan Boyd, Brinlee Boyd, Anderson Boyd, Rebekah Boyd, and Annalynn Boyd; great grandchildren, Jacob Andrews, Ethan Stoltz, Drew Stoltz, Josh Andrews, Jackson Andrews, Christian Larsen, Emma Hensley; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Young; and half-sister, Sara Godsey. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son John Gilbert Young, Jr. and daughter, Joan Marie Scarlet. Active pallbearers will include Nick Burden, Chris Boyd, Chris Hensley, William Barnhill, Evan Boyd, and P.J. Andrews.
