Mr. John Fred Long, Sr., 85, retired self-employed carpenter for the past 25 years and formerly with Lennie Johns Construction and L. S. White Construction, died Sunday, October 22, 2006 at his residence on 8th Avenue. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Oakes & Nichols with Clay Derryberry and Rev. Bob Adair officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The Hickman County native was the son of the late Samuel Long and Anna Mae Ghist Long. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II and was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church. Mr. Long remodeled several older homes in Columbia to modern standards and was an avid auction and yard-sale enthusiast. His wife of 60 years, Virginia Wise Long, died December 17, 2002. Survivors include two daughters, Ruby Prince and Pat (Mike) Rieves of Columbia; three sons, Jim (Sybil) Long of Cadiz, Kentucky, Ronald (Roberta) Long and Donald Long of Columbia; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; a sister, Sara (John) Churchwell of Columbia; and a brother, Austin (Irene) Long of Columbia. He was preceded in death by a son, John Fred Long, Jr.; a son-in-law, Ronnie Prince; two sisters, Ann Era Cabbage and Jewell Adair, and a brother, Edward Long. Active pallbearers are Danny Long, John Churchwell, Tony Stout, Johnny Stout, Ray White, and Kevin Benderman. Honorary pallbearers are Johnathan Long, Jerry White, Jerry Kennedy, and Billy Kennedy.
