Mr. John Doak "J.D." Matthews, 81, retired employee of the Department of Revenue and resident of Scott Hollow Road, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at NHC Hillview. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bill Williamson officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 4 - 7p.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home and Friday from 1 - 2p.m. at the church. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 801 S. On September 10, 1946 he married Martha Turner Matthews of Columbia who survives him. Mr. Matthews was active in the Kiwanis Club where he won the 2005 Hixon Award and had 40 years perfect attendance. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Survivors in addition to his wife are one daughter Jade (Bruce) Kayser of South Bend, Indiana; one son, Turner (Betty) Matthews of Decatur, Alabama; and four grandchildren, Matthew Kayser of South Bend, IN, Andrew Matthews, Scott Matthews both of Decatur, AL, and Chris Matthews of Birmingham, AL. Pallbearers will be Terry Lester, Bobby Chance, Mike Matthews, Barry Matthews, Frank Matthews, Bill Anderson, Gary Hamberg and Jay Jenkins. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Columbia Kiwanis Club, Jim Beatty, Murray Miles, Dr. John Maloof, III, Jim Bull and Allen Elias.
