He moved to Nashville and started to work at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 1996 as an operating room nurse who was cross trained to scrub and assist in surgeries. He was a very accomplished musician playing saxophone, clarinet, guitar, and the piano. He had another passion that was his horses that were very dear to his heart.

After leaving the medical field, he was an extra in numerous Hallmark and Lifetime TV channel movies as well as streaming channels and the big screen. Some of his favorites were Tell Me a Story, Emmitt Till, Bootcamp, Woman of the Movement, and Unsung Hero. John was a huge Reba McEntire fan and was in her movie Christmas in Tune.
