John William Pigg

John William Pigg, 88, retired employee of Union Carbide, farmer and longtime resident of Santa Fe, died Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at NHC Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Donna Higginbotham and Elder Larry Tarkington officiating. Burial will follow in Santa Fe Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Friday from 12:00 - 2:00 P.M. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Santa Fe Cemetery, c/o Norman Harris, 1331 Crofton Park Drive, Columbia, TN 38401 or Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church, c/o Melissa Greer, 1920 Ivy Court, Columbia, TN 38401. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born April 28, 1928 in Maury County, he was the son of the late Daniel Coleman Pigg and the late Essie Fields Pigg. On May 15, 1972 he married Hazel Elizabeth Miller Baker Pigg who preceded him in death July 26, 2013. He was a graduate of Santa Fe High School and contributed to all the area Volunteer Fire Departments. A member of The Bridle & Saddle Club, he was an avid Mule Day collector of caps, knives and memorabilia. He served as curator for The Tennessee Museum of Early Farm Life. Mr. Pigg's career with Union Carbide spanned thirty-two years and he was a member of Union of Operating Engineers Local 912. He was also a member of Maury County Farm Bureau. He was an active member of Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church for several years. Survivors include his daughter, Sandra Gail Pigg Sewell of Santa Fe; step-daughter, Janice Marie Baker (Raymond) Mockmore of Franklin; step grandchildren, Kevin (Shelly) Lindsey; Raymond Lee Mockmore, Jr., William Craig (Elizabeth) Mockmore; step granddaughter-in-law, Mariea Urubek; step great grandchildren, Alexis Lindsey, Hunter Lasley, Benton Lindsey; nephew, Raymond "Pete" (Lennie) Boatright; great niece; and great nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by son-in-law, Dennis Sewell; sister, Evelyn Boatright; niece, Carolyn Boatright Reeves; and step grandson, Tim Lindsey. Active pallbearers will be Charles Pigg, Marion Parham, Little Rip Baxter, Shane Reeves, Calvin Scott, Kevin McMeen, Tony Foster, Charlie Hunt, and Monte Norman. Honorary pallbearers will include his special caregivers, Audrey Wells and Joan Leonard, Gail Pigg, Barbara Connelly, Tony & Susie Sowell, Grover & Karen Cowan, Gardner Head, Ron Bryant, Curtis Delozier, Bobby Cook, Tom & Judy Fleming, Raymond Boatright, Jr., Jimmy Grimmett, congregation of Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church, and Mingo Branch friends.
