John W Steenbergen

John William Steenbergen, 93, retired employee of Monsanto and former longtime resident of Trotwood Avenue, died Thursday, April 19, 2007 at Maury Regional Hospital. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:30 P.M. Sunday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Williamson and the Rev. Thomas Wilson officiating. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 1:30 - 2:30 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Maury County Library, 211 West Eighth Street, Columbia, TN 38401 or First Presbyterian Church, 801 South High Street, Columbia, TN 38401. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. A native of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, he was the son of the late William and Charlott McCulloch Steenbergen. He was married to Sally Lou Musgrave Steenbergen who preceded him in death on June 11, 2001. He was educated in Mason County, West Virginia and attended Marshall University and Furman University earning his degree from Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina in 1937. Mr. Steenbergen had made his home in Columbia since 1938 when he began employment with Monsanto. He joined the U. S. Army Engineers in August 1943, spent two years overseas in China, Burma, and India Theatres, and was discharged as a Tech Sergeant in April 1946. Mr. Steenbergen was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a member and past president of Columbia Lions Club, charter member of Columbia Sons of American Revolution Society, and was a member of AARP. Survivors include his daughter-in-law, Betty Steenbergen of Columbia; one grandson, William R. "Bill" Steenbergen of Murfreesboro; and one granddaughter, Lee Steenbergen of Columbia. He was preceded in death by his son, John W. "Jock" Steenbergen, III.
