John Swafford, Sr. Mr. John Grant Swafford, Sr., retired engineer with South Central Bell and resident of Laird Road in Nashville, died Thursday, January 29, 2004 at Maury Regional Hospital. Funeral services were conducted at 12:00 noon, Saturday, at Forest Hills Baptist Church on Old Hickory Boulevard in Nashville with Rev. Dr. Jerry Winfield and Rev. Bing Davis officiating. Burial was in Spring Hill Memorial Park with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The Marion County native was the son of the late Ulysses Grant Swafford and Mary Graham Swafford. He was a graduate of Marion County High School and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville where he also did post-graduate work. Mr. Swafford served in the Army during World War II and the Korean War. He served as President of Toastmasters, President of the U.T. Alumni Association in Davidson County, and Telephone Pioneers. He was a member of Forest Hills Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of forty-three years, Doris Sue Hardee Swafford of Nashville; one daughter, Mrs. Carol (Harvey) Church of Columbia; one son, John Grant (Jennifer) Swafford of Memphis; one brother, Bill (Barbara) Swafford of Jasper; three grandchildren, Taylor Church, Emma Church and Grant Swafford. He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Swafford. Pallbearers were Joe Strawbridge, Graham Swafford, Greg Hardee, Keith Hardee, Charles Hardee and Bill Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Cave, Clyde King, Jack Wyatt, Paige Sanders, Wayne Jackson, Dr. Gaylon Harris, Dr. Lucy Ledbetter, and Nursing and Rehab Staff at Life Care Center.
