View Funeral Webcast  John William Nicholas, 93, retired employee of John Deere Company and resident of Spring Dale Road, died Sunday, June 9, 2019 at NHC Maury Regional Transitional Care. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11:00 A.M. at Oakes &Nichols Funeral Home with John Vaughan and Wendell Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with Andrew Phillips officiating and military honors provided by the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Columbia Academy, 1101 West 7th Street, Columbia, TN 38401 or American Diabetes Association, Memorial & Honor Program, P. O. Box 15829, Arlington, VA 22215. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born January 13, 1926 in Maury County, he was the son of the late Willis Menifee Nicholas and the late Seraphina Foster Nicholas. He served in the United States Army from 1944-1946 during World War II. In 1990, Mr. Nicholas, started his volunteer career with Maury Regional Medical Center and continued until 2010. He was an avid Vanderbilt football fan and enjoyed gardening. Mr. Nicholas was a member of Graymere Church of Christ since 1989. Survivors include his wife, whom he married November 15, 1947, Jane Wasson Nicholas of Columbia; son, Jim (Kelly) Nicholas of Columbia; granddaughter, Sarah Jane Nicholas of Louisville, Kentucky; step grandson, Ricky Watson of Madisonville, Kentucky; step granddaughter, Samantha (Brandon) Smith of Grandrivers, Kentucky; step great granddaughters, Kaydence Smith, Everleigh Smith both of Grandrivers, Kentucky; and niece, Nancy Hobbs of Lewisburg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, John Wasson Nicholas; siblings, Martha Nicholas Pruitt, Wesley Foster Nicholas, Willis Hilda Nicholas, Annie Lee Nicholas Reiney. Active pallbearers will be Walt Robinson, Kenny Norman, Todd Baxter, Jim Baker, Steven Staggs, Brandon Smith, and Billy Robertson. Honorary pallbearers include George Brazelton, Eddie Harris, Buddy Voss, Jerry Attkisson, Dr. Tim Gordon, Dr. Jim Marshall, Dr. Gibran Naddy, Dr. John Simmons, Dr. Doug Wilburn, and Elders and Deacons of Graymere Church of Christ.
