Mrs. Jolene Hood Thurman, floral designer for Sullivan's Flowers and resident of Knob Creek Road, died Saturday, December 29, 2007 at Vanderbilt University Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Anthony Muston, George Jones, and Joe Rhodes officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to service time at the funeral home. Jolene loved flowers; but if anyone wishes, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2000 Charlotte Avenue, Nashville 37203-2003 . Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was born January 1, 1946, the daughter of the late Robert Allen Hood and Vernice Ethel Thompson Hood. A five year breast cancer survivor, she was very active in the breast cancer meetings at Maury Regional Hospital. For the past five years, she read the poem "One Little Candle Can Do" at the Opening Ceremony of Relay for Life, in which she and her family were very active. She was also an annual participant in The Race For the Cure, benefiting breast cancer. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and honorary member of the Fruit of the Vine. She was a member of Mt. Wesley Church of the Nazarene and attended Knob Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Gwyn Lee Thurman of Columbia; two daughters, Sandy Layne of Murfreesboro; April (Shawn) Van Dervort of Gahanna, Ohio; three sisters, Betty (Walker) Huey of Nashville; her twin Joyce (Ted) Houston and Alette Hood, both of Columbia; two brothers, Billy Allen (Terri Jo) Hood of Columbia; Robert Carroll (Audrey) Hood of Santa Fe; three grandchildren who affectionately called her "MoMo' and "JoJo", Haylee Layne, Joshua Van Dervort, Spencer Thurman Layne; several nieces and nephews, Archie (Dianne) Steen, Jr., Theron Hood, Troy (Keela) Hood, Lynette (Trey) Fitts, Amy Jolene (Scott) Cranford, Jennifer (Jim) Morrison, Steven Hood, and Charles Allen Hood; and several great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by a niece, Terri Jones; and a nephew, Trent Hood. Pallbearers will be David McDowell, George Jones, Bill Davis, Jimmy Bassham, Clay Buttrey, Earl McKee, Ronnie Thurman, Mabron Scott, Shane Bradford, and Kurt Mathews.
