MR. JOSEPH DURHAM Mr. Joseph Porter Durham, 75, retired metro school teacher and resident of Cheek Road in Nashville, died Saturday, May 10, 2003, at Alive Hospice in Nashville. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, May 17, 2003 at Hillwood Presbyterian Church in Nashville with Rev. Rick Rouguie officiating. Memorials may be made to Hillwood Presbyterian Church, 6220 Hickory Valley Road, Nashville, TN, 37205. The Helena, Arkansas native was the son of the late Joseph Durham and Bertile Porter Durham. He was a graduate of Columbia Military Academy, received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee and his Masters degree in History from Vanderbilt University. Mr. Durham taught in the Metropolitan Nashville public school system for many years, retiring in 1989. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and also served in the U.S. Army during the occupation of Japan and the Korean War, achieving the rank of Captain in the 1st Cavalry Airborne Infantry Division. He was awarded, among other honors, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Hillwood Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife, Everett Carlton Durham of Nashville; one daughter, Martha Carlton Durham of Mt. Pleasant; one son, J. Porter (Victoria) Durham, Jr. of Lookout Mountain; three grandchildren, J. Porter Durham, III, Elisabeth Park Durham, Everett Leighton Durham; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Chatwin Doty McInnis.
