Mr. Joseph Patrick Smith,72, retired employee with Wackenhut Corporation and resident of Brookview Circle, died Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at St. Thomas Alive Hospice. Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Catherine Catholic Church with Father Davis Chackaleckel officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Friday from 4 - 6:30 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with a prayer service beginning at 6:30. The Bridgeport, Connecticut native was the son of the late Joseph Patrick Smith and Ann Elizabeth McPhail. He attended the Merchant Marine Academy and later served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church where he was a liturgical minister and was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over forty years. He was a loving father and grandfather. Survivors include two daughters, Ann Elizabeth Epperson of Springfield and Kathleen "Katie" Smith of McEwen; three grandchildren, Autumn Tubville, Patrick Colton Shouse, Dakota Cheyenne Shouse; one sister, Marie McNamara of Venice, Florida and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Jordan. Pallbearers will be Tom Krantz, Clyde Westmoreland, Terry Careful, Tony Murphy, Don Johnson and Gene McShane. Honorary pallbearers will be Knights of Columbus and liturgical ministers at St. Catherine Catholic Church.
