Kathryn “Poppie” Pappas Carden, 94, retired nurse and resident of Woods Drive, died Saturday, January 19, 2019 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11:00 A.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home in Columbia with Father Gregory Hohnholt officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Born May 4, 1924 in Hamilton County, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Constine “Gus” Pappas and the late Marie Sakkis Pappas. On October 29, 1946, she married William Jasper Carden, Jr who preceded her in death February 15, 2008. She was a graduate of Hamilton Chattanooga High School and attended Newells Nursing School for three years. For ten years, she worked for Dr. Dan Gray and then retired from Maury Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Carden was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and attended Riverside United Methodist Church with her husband. Survivors include her sons, William J. “Bill” (Jacalyn) Carden III of Hendersonville, North Carolina; Charles T. “Tommy” (Diana) Carden of Chattanooga; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her younger brothers, E. Gus Pappas and Nick Pappas.
