View Video TributeView Funeral WebcastMr. Kenneth Warren "Ken" Hay, Jr., 71, retired teacher and principal and longtime resident of Columbia, died Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Aleridge and Rev. Melinda Britt officiating. Burial will follow in Kidd Cemetery in Lawrence County. The family will visit with friends Friday from 4 - 7:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. A native of Vicksburg, Mississippi he was the son of the late Kenneth Warren Hay, Sr. and Beatrice Brown Hay. He was a graduate of White Haven High School and earned his Bachelor's degree, Master's degree and Plus Thirty all at the University of Memphis. He was a beloved educator and served as Principal of Summertown High School from 1978 until 1999. Upon his retirement he enjoyed being back in the classroom doing substitute teaching for ten years at Whitthorne Middle School. He was a great craftsman and built a barn with his own hands using lumber from trees grown on his family farm. Mr. Hay felt his greatest achievement was his family. He loved the Lord and was an active member of First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife of fifty years, India Stewart Hay of Columbia; daughter, Dawn (Chris) Gray of Columbia; son, Brian (Nikki) Hay of Columbia; grandchildren, Molly Gray, Shelby Hay, Hayley Gray and Sydney Hay; great grandchild, Brylen Gibson; and he was close to his cousins in Mississippi. Active pallbearers will be Tim Scribner, Kevin Barnes, Tim Dugger, Marc Paynes, Jamie Stewart and James "Bubba" Stewart. Honorary pallbearers include past and present staff and faculty of Summertown High School.
