Kenneth Dean Travis, Sr., 90, passed away on Monday, August 21, 2017, at his residence in Hampshire. Funeral services will be Saturday at 1:00 P.M. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at the corner of Highway 412 and Cayce Lane in Columbia. Bishop Kevin O'Bryant and Bishop Ronnie Pennington will officiate. Burial will follow in Campground Cemetery on Swan Creek in Hickman County. The family will visit with friends Saturday from 10:00 A.M. - 12:00 noon at the church. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements. Born September 22, 1926, Kenneth was the son of the late Eldridge Lee Travis, Sr. and the late Esther May Smith Travis. He was one of eight children having two brothers and five sisters. He enlisted in the U. S. Army after World War II and served with his brother "Doc" in Japan. He met Jean Marilyn Gordon, his sweetheart and love of his life, prior to joining the military; and they were married in 1948. Kenneth retired from Union Carbide in 1986 and spent his time farming, raising vegetables, working on guns, volunteering at church, entertaining family and friends with his quick humor, and playing with his grandchildren. He was well known for his marksmanship. He loved being outside in the fall, cutting wood with his chainsaw. He enjoyed helping his neighbors by plowing their gardens and sharing his homegrown produce. Survivors include his wife of sixty-nine years, Jean Marilyn Gordon Travis; four children, Rita Greene, Kenneth (Anne) Travis, Jr., Gordon (Susan) Travis, Eldridge (Rosie) Travis; nineteen grandchildren; thirty-three great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; sisters, Helen Fowler, Glenna (Thomas) Finerty, Jean (Ernie) Cobb; and thirty nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Tom Travis and Eldridge Travis, Jr.; two sisters, Ovie (Raymond) Pennington and Barbara (Adron) Skelley. The family wishes to thank friends and neighbors for many visits to their home; and a special thank you goes out to Home Health of Middle Tennessee and Hospice Compassus workers, Faye and Mari.
