Mrs. Lecy Sparkman Dobbins, 87, long-time resident of the Cross Bridges Community, died Thursday, September 8, 2005 at NHC Place at Cool Springs. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Carl May officiating. Burial will be in the Cross Bridges Methodist Churchyard. A native of Maury County, she was born May 17, 1918 to the late Berry and Sallie Fox Sparkman. She grew up in the Bethel Community and was a 1936 graduate of Santa Fe High School. She attended Austin Peay State College and taught for several years at schools in the Stiversville and Bethel communities. During World War II, she worked for Ford Motor Company in Detroit, assembling bomber engines as part of the war effort. Upon returning to Maury County, she worked as a laboratory analyst in the phosphate industry for more than 30 years, first at Hoover-Mason near Mt. Pleasant and later at TVA and Scott's Laboratory in Columbia. Mrs. Dobbins was a member of the Arkland Church of Christ and had been a member of the Jane Knox Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Captain James Madison Sparkman Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Maury County Historical Society and the Williamsport Home Demonstration Club. She leaves her husband of 57 years, James Harlan Dobbins of Cross Bridges. In addition, she is survived by two daughters, Janice (Randal) Mashburn of Nashville and Sally (Greg) Grainger of Brentwood; two grandsons, David Dobbins Grainger and Jonathan Henry Grainger, both of Brentwood; a niece, Elaine (Larry) Rockovich of Franklin. She was preceded in death by a sister, Clara Wakefield and four brothers, Kirby Sparkman, Clifton Sparkman, Claude Sparkman and Billy Sparkman. Active pallbearers are Winfred Baker, Bret Herrmann, Donny Walters, Wallace Jarratt, Lee Scott, Sidney Ebbeling and Leonard Johnson, Jr. Honorary pallbearers include Ralph Baker, Gary Herrmann, Carl Harris, Jr., Jimmy Walters , Jack Cecil and Dr. Thomas Dake.
