View Funeral Webcast Lenna Ray Witherspoon Hines, 102, went to rest in her Savior’s arms on Monday, October 31, 2022. Lenna was born on Taylor’s Creek in Hickman County August 14, 1920 to Beulah Brententine Chappell Witherspoon and Jessie Albert “Ab” Witherspoon. She was born as a fraternal twin to her sister Glenna May Witherspoon Jones who preceded her in death. Lenna, having joined Cross Bridges Baptist Church in 1941, was the oldest and held the longest membership at the church. She was a longtime resident of Hatcher Lane until she began living with her loving children who gladly shared in the privilege of providing her care. She frequently said, “Hard work never hurt anybody”. As a 25-year employee of Publix Shirt Factory, she knew what that hard work was but often said that she wished she had never retired. Her retirement became filled with “work” and most any day she could be seen in her yard planting or weeding her flowers, mowing or tending to her small backyard garden. Lenna is survived by her children J.P. Hines, Jr.(Jolayne), Patricia Hines Duncan (J.T.), and Kay Wood (Danny); grandchildren Kristie Simard (Jacques), Kenny Hines (Anita), Stephanie Irvin (Jeff), Robby Hardwick (Julie), Cindy Grimmitt (Lee), Cher Spears, Reagan Wood, and Jeana Hendrix (Andy); great-grandchildren Abbie Greenwood (Chris), Kylee and Lawson Hines, Josh Irvin (Elizabeth), Jordan Wood (Jim), Hannah Irvin, Brooke Milam (Cody), Seth and Drew Grimmitt, Mackenzie Spears, Catherine and Madeline Hendrix, Alyana Wasserman and Audie Hardwick; great-great grandchildren Jackson, Sam, and Price Irvin, Lucy, Ellenor, and Virginia Wood, and Tylar Milam; Special niece Pam Phillips and many other nieces and nephews and extended family. When any of these family members would tell her “I love you, Granny” she always answered, “I love you too” and most of the time add, “I’ve been loving you a long time” making it that much more special. She was told on her 102nd birthday, “Happy Birthday Granny, I am so glad you were born, none of us would be here without you.” She, with a touch of humor and a touch of truth, said, “Yeah, y’all ought to be thanking me.” We certainly do thank her for her life and for loving each of us all for our years. We will be missing her but still loving her “for a long time”. Other than her parents and twin she was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Clifton, Hansel, Kenneth, J.C. and J.E. Witherspoon, Hattie Witherspoon Petty and Tisha Witherspoon Phillips; her daughter Jeannette Hines Hardwick, son Ronnie Hines, the father of her children James Polk Hines, Sr. son-in-law Bobby Hardwick, and daughter-in-law Diane Law Hines. Pallbearers are Josh Irvin, Jim Wood, Jacques Simard, Lee Grimmitt, Seth Grimmitt, Drew Grimmitt, Andy Hendrix, and Ritchie Grooms. Honorary pallbearers are Members of Cross Bridges Baptist Church, Jeff Irvin, Kenny Hines, William Perry Kimbrough, and special caregiver Lori Lance. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Maury Regional Cardiac Care Unit, and Ascension St. Thomas-Hickman Rehab. Funeral service will be conducted Thursday, November 3, 2022 at 1:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rickey Cotton officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 11:00 A.M. until service time at the funeral home. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com.
