Lewis H Davis

Major Lewis Howell Davis, Jr. went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on March 2, 2007 in Kinsport, Tennessee with his beloved wife of sixty-four years by his side. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Billy Kimbrough officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by the U. S. Air Force Honor Guard stationed at Columbus, Mississippi. The family will visit with friends Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time for services at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com.He was born on January 24, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Emily Ruth and Lewis Howell Davis Sr. While pursuing a chemical engineering degree at Texas A&M University, he was called for duty with the United States Air Force at the beginning of World War II. Among his many accomplishments as a Major, Lewis H. Davis flew B-24s in Europe. Major Davis also served in the Korean War where he flew rescue missions in C-54s. He was later assigned to Rhine Main in Frankfurt, Germany, where he flew C-130s. He was awarded many medals for his bravery and service. His final assignment brought him and his family to Sewart AFB in Smyrna, Tennessee. He retired from active duty on February 28, 1963. After relocating his family to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Mr. Davis attended Middle Tennessee State University where he received a Bachelor of Science and a Master's Degree in Mathematics and Education. Between 1965 and 1984, he taught high school Mathematics and Science at Hume Fogg High School and Antioch High School in Nashville.Lewis H. Davis was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and will be remembered always. Those who remain behind are: his wife, Billie Frances Davis of Kingsport; his daughter and son-in law, Janice and James M. Yeager of Kinsgport; and his grandchildren, Jennifer M. Hubble and husband, Ben C. Hubble, J. Matthew Yeager, and Jacob M. Yeager.
