Dr. Lewis Edward Moore, Jr., 73, retired Professor at Columbia State Community College, died Sunday, December 11, 2005, at his residence on Myers Avenue. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Thursday at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Jim Hughes, Rev. Jeff Jacob, and Dr. Bill Andrews officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 3:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home and Thursday after 1:00 P.M. at the church. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Davidson County native was the son of the late Lewis Edward Moore, Sr. and Eunice Campbell Moore. He served in the U. S. Army from 1954 - 1956. Dr. Moore received Bachelor's (1954) and Master's (1959) Degrees from Vanderbilt University and a Doctorate from the University of Mississippi (1974), all with honors in political science. Dr. Moore had made his home in Columbia since 1960 when he became a member of the faculty of Columbia Military Academy. At CMA, he became Head of the Social Studies Department, coached in the Athletic Department and recruited the Nashville area. One of the founding fathers of Columbia State Community College, Dr. Moore was the first full-time faculty member in 1966. He had served as professor of history and political science and held positions as Chairman of the Social Science Division, Coordinator of Upper Division and Graduate Programs, and interim Assistant Dean for Arts and Sciences. The CSCC 1969 Men's Tennis Team that he coached won the Tennessee Junior College Athletic Association Championship, which was the first athletic championship that the college won. He received the Distinguished Faculty Award in 1984 and the tennis complex was named for him in 1996. He retired in May 2000.Dr. Moore was a weekly contributor of articles to the Daily Herald for several years and has served as a member of numerous community organizations. A longtime member of the Columbia Rotary Club, he served on the Board from 1991 - 1994 and was honored with the Paul Harris Award. He had also been a member of ALS Central Tennessee Chapter, Frank G. Clement Foundation, Maury County Animal Shelter Association, Maury County Arts Guild, Maury County Better Schools Task Force, Maury County Democratic Party Executive Committee, Maury County Historical Society, Maury County Tennis Association, and United Way of Maury County. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife of fifty-one years, Lil Lewis Moore of Columbia; two daughters, Mrs. Bonnie (Jim) Rodgers and Mrs. Melinda (John) Fleming, both of Columbia; one son, Lewis E. "Chip" Moore, III of Huntsville, Alabama; one sister, Mrs. Nancy Walton of Gatlinburg; and six grandchildren, Lucy Fleming, Mica Fleming, Lucas Fleming, Rebecca Rodgers, Shannon (Robin) Rodgers, and Melissa (Rob) Jurbergs. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Bobby Frank Moore.Pallbearers will be Aubrey Flagg, Dr. Bill Andrews, Dr. Barry Gidcomb, Harvey Fischer, David Ogden, Bill Draper, Lucas Fleming and Mica Fleming. Honorary pallbearers will be faculty and staff of Columbia State Community College, former members of CSCC Tennis Team, Disciple IV Bible Class at First United Methodist Church, staff of First United Methodist Church, and members of the Columbia Rotary Club.
