Lillian Marie Cook Smallwood, 89, resident of Walnut Lane in Columbia, died Thursday, November 17, 2016 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Pastor Henry Coles, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. Born September 26, 1927 in Essex County, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Cook and Annie Moore Cook. For many years, she worked for the Federal Government as secretary and a telephone operator, before becoming a homemaker. She volunteered at Watchung Elementary School in the library and the PTA. Mrs. Smallwood had a green thumb, enjoyed gardening, traveling, and reading. An avid musician, she played piano for over ten years and was employed as a fund raiser for the Detroit Orchestra Symphony. She attended Grace Presbyterian Church in Montclair, New Jersey.Survivors include her husband, whom she married April 28, 1956, Kenneth Wells Smallwood of Columbia; daughter, Susan V. (Ted) Logan of Spring Hill; son, Mark W. (Jennifer Easley) Smallwood of Spring Hill; grandchildren, Rachel V. Logan, Trey E. Logan, and Joshua Z. Smallwood; and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her five sisters and two brothers.
