View Funeral Webcast Lloyd Edward “Rip” Baxter, Jr., 78, retired business owner of Weary Rust Small Engine Repair Shop, died Sunday, January 27, 2019 at his residence surrounded by his family. Funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 11:00 A.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Jacob Holmes and Craig Evans officiating. Burial will follow in Baxter Cemetery in the South Point Community. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Condolences maybe extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born March 29, 1940 in Hickman County, he was the son of the late Lloyd Edward Baxter, Sr. and the late Jennie Lou Love Baxter. He was a 1958 graduate of Hampshire High School. Rip was a long-time Church of Christ minister in Hickman County. He was very active in his community of Santa Fe, having coached baseball and softball, served as PTO President for many years, and retired as chief of the Santa Fe Volunteer Fire Department. An avid woodworker and builder, he enjoyed building and flying model airplanes, building models for his many train sets, refurbishing and showing hit and miss gas engines. He loved to play the guitar and fiddle, and enjoyed pickin’ and grinin’ time with his family and friends. Mr. Baxter was a member of Spring Hill Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, whom he married September 20, 1958, Kathrine “Kay” Anderson Baxter of Santa Fe; beloved pet, Chipper; children, Belynda (Ray) Jenkins of Knoxville; Kimberly Johnston (Curtis Hoffman) of Meridianville, Alabama; Miriam Thompson of Bartlett; Lloyd Edward “ Rip” (Kacy) Baxter, III of Columbia; brother, David “Beefy” (Debbie) Baxter of Spring Hill; sister, Nancy (Harold) Skidmore of Guntersville, Alabama; grandchildren, Trevor (Amanda) Lockhart of Winchester; Taylor (Dakota) Qualls of Linden; Seth Johnston of Memphis; step-grandchildren, Ray Hoover (Nora) Jenkins of Knoxville; Drew (Eden) Jenkins of Wartburg; Leah Jenkins of Charlotte, North Carolina; great grandson, Maxx Qualls of Linden; step great granddaughter, Hattie Jenkins of Wartburg; brothers-in-law, Glenn Petty of Spring Hill; Dean Buchanan of Maryville; special grandson, Ryan Franks of Ellerslie, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mark and Ada Love, Joseph and Lillian Riley Baxter; sisters, Stella Joyce Baxter Petty and Betty Jane Baxter Buchanan. Active pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Trevor Lockhart, Taylor Qualls, Seth Johnston and his nephews, Brent Skidmore, Kevin Skidmore, and brother-in-law, Glenn Petty. Honorary pallbearers include Jim and Sandra Taylor, Jimmy and Shannon Rippey, Ronnie and Danette Pack, Shirley Thompson, Kerry and Jeanne Crocker, R.L. Potts, Billy Potts, Raybon Kelly, James Woody, Hampshire High School Class of 1958, and members of Spring Hill Church of Christ.
