Louis Arwood Day, 89, retired owner and operator of Piggly Wiggly and resident of Academy Lane, died Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2:00 P.M. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with Father Chris Bowhay and Father Thomas Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in St. John’s Churchyard with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Monday from 12:00 P.M. until service time at the church. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com.Born May 29, 1929 in Ripley, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Fredrick Boaz Augustus Day and the late Cecilia O’Donnell Day. When in first grade, he met his future wife with whom he instantly bonded. Though they traveled different pathways during their lifetime, their lives always seemed to intertwine. After his discharge from the military, Louis returned home to find his true love once again and married Helen Anne Turman Day on February 10, 1955. A 1944 graduate of Horn Lake High School in Mississippi, Mr. Day was on the first football team. During the Korean War, he served in the United States Army, where he achieved Rank of 1st Lieutenant. After returning home from Korea, he continued his education and was a 1953 graduate of the University of Mississippi. Mr. Day was an avid golfer and at the age of 81 shot his age. Louis loved traveling to his mountain home, even the eight days during the blizzard of 1993 without power or water in Franklin, North Carolina. He was a member of the Noon Rotary Club from 1974-2002, Piggly Wiggly Alabama Warehouse Board, and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church since 1973, where he served on Vestry off and on for many years. Survivors include his wife, Helen Anne Turman Day of Columbia; children, Louis Arwood “Buddy” (Deborah) Day, Jr. of Columbia; Allison Day (Thomas) Mainolfi of Asheville, North Carolina; Lou Anne Day Pritchard of Memphis; grandchildren, Ashley Day (Allen) Roberts of Whitehouse; Anna Day Mainolfi of Baltimore, Maryland; Helen Anne Mainolfi of Asheville, North Carolina; Andrew Thomas “Drew” Mainolfi of Asheville, North Carolina; Mary Allison Pritchard of Brooklyn, New York; Anne Katherine Pritchard of Memphis; sister, Mary Ellen (Everette) Hill of Lake Cormorant, Mississippi; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by eight siblings. Active pallbearers will be Dr. Bob Thompson, Buddy Day, Thomas Mainolfi, Drew Mainolfi, Allen Roberts, and Joe Wade. Honorary pallbearers include Frank Smith, Chuck Day, and Gage Logan.
