Mrs. Lura Whiteside Pogue, 97, retired school teacher and resident of West 7th Street, died Monday, November 14, 2005 at Life Care Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Mike Kesler and Jeremy Butt officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens. The Maury County native was the daughter of the late Josiah Finley Whiteside and Lura Paulina Galloway Whiteside. On May 6, 1939 she married Robert A. Pogue who preceded her in death June 11, 1982. She graduated from Columbia Central High School and Middle Tennessee State University where she earned a B.S. in Education. A longtime resident of the Cathey's Creek Community she was a member of Cathey's Creek church of Christ where she taught Bible Class from 1932 - 1939. In 1942 when she moved to Columbia she became a member of West 7th Street church of Christ where she taught pre-school Sunday School from 1952 - 1995. During World War II Mrs. Pogue worked for the government in a Child Care Services program. She taught in Maury County schools for 39 years and after her retirement worked with the West 7th Street church of Christ Weekday School Pre-K Program. She was a member of the Ladies Bible Class at West 7th Street church of Christ and was a life member of the Retired Teachers Association. Survivors include two nieces, Lura K. (John) Elder of Fredericksburg, VA, Alice Helton of Kingsport; two nephews, Bill Brown of Hohenwald, Fred Pickard of Jacksonville Beach, Florida; and survived locally by nieces and nephews-in-law, Roberta and Dozier Hooten, Alice Campbell, Sue and Don Garner, Judy and Porter King, Carnice White, Marlene and Bobby Huckaby, Blair and Sandra Pogue, and Jimmy Pogue. Pallbearers will be Al Pogue, Clay Pickard, Pat Campbell, Jason Beck, John Elder, Joe Elder, Steve Elder, Robert W. Pogue, John Beck and Kevin Pickard. Honorary pallbearers will be Linda Webb, Jessica Kinzer, Linda Holt, Melissa Ellis, Flora Mitchell, Jan King, Betty Pogue, and David & Sean Bell.
