Lura McCord Rayburn

Mrs. Lura McCord Rayburn, 91, widow of Charles R. "Charlie" Rayburn, Sr. and long-time resident of Eighth Avenue, died Saturday, May 3, 2008 at Maury Regional Hospital. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the Atrium of First United Methodist Church concluding with a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Private family interment will be in Marshall County Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 222 West 7th Street, Columbia 38401 or Maury Regional Hospital Auxiliary, 1224 Trotwood Avenue, Columbia 38401. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. Born to the late Marks Wright McCord and Lula Bingham McCord on February 4, 1917, she spent her early life in Marshall County. Early in her married life, she worked at Tennessee Knitting Mills. Mrs. Rayburn was one of the first crossing guards at Riverside School and loved all her "children". She volunteered at Maury Regional Hospital for thirty years and was active in the affairs of First United Methodist Church. Survivors include her children, Anne R. Kelly of Pensacola, Florida, Nancy and Bill Dennis of Columbia, C. Richard and Yvonne Rayburn of Charlotte, North Carolina; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruth McCord (James) Rutland of Cadiz, Kentucky, Jean McCord Fast of Triune; brother, John K. McCord of Nashville; sisters-in-law, Louise Maddux (Mrs. Taylor, Sr.) Rayburn of Columbia and Martha Lou (C. P.) McCord of Charleston, South Carolina. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters, four brothers, and a son-in-law, Allen Kelly.
