Mack Whiteside

Samuel Marcus "Mack" Whiteside, 66, life-long resident and farmer of the Hampshire Community, died Friday, September 23, 2005 at Maury Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Hampshire United Methodist Church with Rock Jaggers and Bob Duncan officiating. Burial will be in the Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols and after 1:00 p.m. Monday at the church. A life-long resident of the Hampshire Community, he was the son of the late Thomas Brantley Whiteside, Sr. and Pearl Andrews Whiteside. He was a 1956 graduate of Hampshire High School and attended Austin Peay University. While serving in the U. S. Army he was stationed in Korea and was a member of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. Mr. Whiteside retired with over 30 years service from Occidental Chemical Corporation. He owned and operated Whiteside's Self-Service (better-known as "Mack's ") for 34 years in the Hampshire Community. He was a life-long member and active in the affairs of the Hampshire United Methodist Church and served as a Trustee for many years. In 1994 he was elected to the Maury County Commission and was serving his third term at the time of his death. He was a member of the Maury County Water Board from 1990 to 1994 and was Chairman of the Maury County Budget Committee. He was married June 1, 1968 to the former Linda Lentz of Columbia, who survives and resides in Hampshire. Additionally, he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Melinda and Taylor Guettner of Hampshire and Scarlett and Todd Gilliam of Hampshire; a grandchild, Samuel Guettner of Hampshire; two step-grandchildren, Lauren Gilliam and Katelyn Gilliam of Mt. Pleasant; a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Glen Wallis of Nashville; a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas Brantley and Janet Whiteside, Jr. of Huntsville, Alabama; a sister-in-law, Charlotte Morrow of Columbia; long-time loyal employees, Doug Embler, Margaret Rachel Johnson and Frances Smith; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Lee Anna (Don) Lemaster of Columbia.Active pallbearers are Jimmie D. Patton, J. T. Duncan, Jr., Ken Cecil, Joe Reischman, Brant Whiteside, Bill Wallis, Terry Whiteside and Paul Whiteside. Honorary pallbearers include Sam Whiteside, David Johnson, W. M. Jaggers, Mike Gillstrap, Phillip Griffith, George R.
