MRS. MARIE COTHRON Mrs. Marie Boyd Cothron, 79, widow of Leland W. Cothron, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at her daughter's residence in Owens Crossroads, Alabama. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2:30 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Wendell Robinson, John Vaughan, and Bill Cantrell officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 A.M. at East Huntsville Church of Christ, 801 Humes Avenue, Huntsville, Alabama, with Bill Cantrell officiating. The Dover, Tennessee, native was born August 10, 1923, to the late Albert Lee Boyd and Pearl May Wyatt Boyd. She received her education in the Stewart County schools. She married Leland W. Cothron on April 7, 1940, in Franklin, Tennessee, and moved to his hometown of Columbia. They co-owned and operated Cothron's Grocery on Woodland Street for over thirty years, before retiring in 1977. Mrs. Cothron was a charter member of Graymere Church of Christ and a longtime resident of Pickens Lane, before moving to Alabama three years ago. She attended East Huntsville Church of Christ while residing in Huntsville. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Linda (Ray) Upton of Owens Crossroads, Alabama; one son, Leland A. "Tony" (Carolyn) Cothron of Maryville, Tennessee; stepmother, Mrs. Mabel Markin Boyd of Dover, Tennessee; two half-sisters, Mrs. Maxine (Sammy) Cook of Clarksville; Mrs. Lucille (Robert) Coakley of Erin, Tennessee; six grandchildren, Karen (Brian) Ball of Kingsland, Georgia; Natalie Cothron and Whitney Cothron, both of Maryville; Danny (Leslie) Upton of Hazel Green, Alabama; Becky (Keith Webster) Berry and Dwayne Upton, both of Harvest, Alabama; five great grandchildren, Christina Ball and Brendon Ball, both of Kingsland, Georgia; Joe Berry and Zack Berry, both of Harvest, Alabama; and Nichole Upton of Hazel Green, Alabama. Other survivors include sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Shirley (David Nolan) Boyd of Dover, Tennessee; Nolan (Dorothy) Cothron, Raymond (Jean) Cothron, and Peggy Sue Ballard, all of Nashville; Melba Jean Bower of Winterhaven, Florida; Billy Joe (Penny) Cothron, Mary Ann Cothron, and Jewell Cheek, all of Columbia; John Head of Lavergne, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leland W. Cothron in 1989; her sister, Bessie Head; and her half brother, Elmer Boyd.Pallbearers will be her nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandsons and great grandsons.
