Mrs. Marjorie Anne Orr Barr, 81, long-time resident of the Hampshire Pike, died Sunday, February 20, 2005, at Life Care Center. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 3:30 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jeff Jacob and Tom Vann officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols and Tuesday from 2:30 to 3:30 P.M. at the church. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 222 West 7th Street, Columbia, 38401. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. A native and life-long resident of Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Jake K. Orr and Irene Watson Orr. She was a 1941 graduate of Columbia Central High School and later graduated from Peabody College in Nashville. Following graduation, she worked in the Alumni Office at Vanderbilt University. Mrs. Barr was a member of the First United Methodist Church for many years and was active in the work of United Methodist Women and the Ayres-Whitney Sunday School Class.Active in civic and community affairs, Mrs. Barr was a member of the James K. Polk Memorial Association, Maury County Chapter, APTA, Mitsis Club, and the Terrace Garden Club. She was an avid bridge player and was a member of the Duplicate Bridge Group.She was married June 2, 1950 to Hiram Marion Barr, Jr. He preceded her in death November 5, 1983.Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie Anne (Moody) Castleman of Nashville and Elizabeth Clair "Betsy" Barr of Columbia; two sons, Gene (Sally) Barr and James (Kate) Barr of Columbia; three grandchildren, Clair Castleman, Gene Barr, Jr. and Whitson Barr.Active pallbearers are R. F. Chapman, Jacson Chapman, Shelby Carpenter, Bob Sweeney, Paul Carpenter, Page Chamberlain, Miller Pinkleton, David Locke, and Bedford Lochridge. Honorary pallbearers include Marjorie and Al Johnson, Tom Byrd, Bill Plant, Mae Duncan, Frances Page, employees of Barr Motor Company, Peabody College friends, and members of the Ayres-Whitney Sunday School Class.
