Mary Long Chadwell Clark died on December 13, 2016, at NHC Hillview in Columbia, at the age of 101. She was the daughter of Isaac Litton and Ria Baltzell Long Chadwell, and was born on September 15, 1915, in Mt. Pleasant, TN. She graduated from Hay Long High School when she was 16, and attended Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, VA, and Bowling Green Business College. During the depression she worked for the Department of Agriculture.In 1937, she married Grady O'Neil Clark and they had three sons. Following her husband's death in 1972, she went to work at Industrial Products in Mt. Pleasant. She later worked for Byrd Insulation, also in Mt. Pleasant. Mary Long finally "retired" at age 88. She lived in Mt. Pleasant almost all her life until moving to The Bridge in Columbia in 2007. Mary Long was always active in church activities, initially at her family church, Holy Cross Episcopal Church, in Mt. Pleasant. After the closure of that mission church, she became a communicant of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Columbia, where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and was secretary/treasurer of the Episcopal Church Women's group for many years. She was a longtime member of the Board of St. John's - Ashwood.Mary Long was involved in many civic activities. She was a Grey Lady at the old King's Daughters' Hospital and continued as a volunteer at the "new" Maury County Hospital. She was a member of the King's Daughters organization and the Polk Association. Mary Long and her husband, Grady, were among the founding members of the Mt. Pleasant Country Club. She served as secretary and treasurer of the Lawrence Cemetery Care Association for thirty years. Mary Long was interested in history and genealogy, and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Maury County Historical Society. Mary Long is survived by her son, Grady O'Neil Clark, Jr. (Neil), daughter-in-law Sue; three grandsons, William Chadwell Clark (Deanna), Stephen O'Neil Clark (Jill), and John Cole Clark; two great-grandchildren, Kelsey Clark (fiancé Matt Mercer) and William Orion Clark; niece, Susan Webster Bailey; nephew, Thomas Crosby Webster, III; great-niece, Sarah Robert; great-nephews, Thomas Webster and Jonathan Webster; and five great-great nieces. Mary Long was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two sons, Chadwell in 1938 and John Chadwell (Johnny) in 1957. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Sue Litton Chadwell Webster, and a great-nephew, Joshua Bailey.The family would like to thank Dr. Cummins Couch, Karen Perry, and the entire staff at NHC - Hillview for their excellent care during the past three years. The staff at The Bridge also showed great kindness during Mary Long's years at that facility. The funeral service will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church at 2 pm on Saturday, December 17, 2016, officiated by The Reverend Christopher Bowhay and The Reverend Thomas S. Wilson. Burial will follow in the Lawrence Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant. Visitation will be from 12:30 until 2 pm in the St. Peter's Parish Hall. Grandsons, nephews, and Matt Mercer will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. William Haywood, Glenn Perry, Bob Sweeney, Dr. B. I. Naddy, and Sue Malone. Memorials may be given to the Lawrence Cemetery Care Association, Inc. at P.O.
