Mary Jane Matthews

Mrs. Mary Jane Hammond Matthews, 74, retired teacher's aid at McDowell Elementary School, died Thursday, July 6, 2006, at her residence on Winding Way. The family will visit with friends Friday from 4:00 - 7:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, P. O. The Maury County native was the daughter of the late Colonel Leroy Hammond, Esq. and Sarah Cowan Hammond. She was married to Judge James Edward "Jimmy" Matthews who preceded her in death on January 27, 2005. Mrs. Matthews attended Southwestern and Rhodes Colleges in Memphis. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant. Survivors include two sons, Richard (Donna) Matthews and Jim (Teresa) Matthews, both of Columbia; and four grandchildren, Holland Matthews, Elise Matthews, Katie Halsey, and Carmen Tanner. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Belinda Ann Matthews in 1996.
