View Video Tribute Mrs. Mary Eleanor Butler Murphy, 83, retired employee of Maury Regional Hospital and resident of North Hardin Drive, died Friday, November 4, 2005, at Maury Regional Hospital. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Monday at Polk Memorial Gardens with Rev. Derrell Billingsley officiating. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 3:00 - 5:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. A native of Henderson, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Irl Butler and Mary Elizabeth Hatchett Butler. She was married to William Bourdough "Bill" Murphy, Jr. who preceded her in death on February 19, 1977. She was a graduate of Hebbardsville High School in Henderson, Kentucky. Mrs. Murphy was a former switchboard operator with Southern Bell before retiring as switchboard operator for Maury Regional Hospital. She was the former owner of By Path Café in downtown Columbia for over ten years. Very active in Girl Scouts for over twenty years, she was awarded the "Thanks" Badge. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and a member of West End Baptist Church. Survivors include four sons, William Glenn Murphy of Little Rock, Arkansas; Patrick Irl Murphy of Des Moines, Iowa; Michael Wayne (Janet Wetterer) Murphy of Knoxville; Richard Anthony (Lesley Lorino) Murphy of Old Hickory; two daughters, Brenda Ann Murphy (Richard) Hamrick of Fort Smith, Arkansas; Sheila Gail Murphy (William Chester) Martin of Lawrenceville, Georgia; grandchildren, William Kenneth Murphy, Angela Kay Murphy Sazma, Patrick Irl Murphy, Jr., Jennifer Murphy Pingley, Catherine Elizabeth Murphy, Emily Heather Murphy, Charlotte Rebecca Murphy Thompson, Matthew William Murphy, Hailey Katherine Huffman Murphy, Matthew Sean Patrick Murphy, Cara Lindsey Hamrick, Rachael Ann Hamrick, W. Chet Martin, Jr., Anna Murphy Martin; and four great grandchildren, Andriea Murphy, Nicole Murphy, Salma Murphy, Cody Michael Pingley. She was preceded in death by one grandson, Christopher Glenn Murphy and two brothers, William Butler and Hewitt Irl Butler. Pallbearers will be sons and sons-in-law.
